Hello to new friends!  I would give you a long summary of who I am and such, but I'm really bad at that sort of compression.  Let's just say I'm American, live in the frigid Northeast and have a wonderful husband whose initials will vary between DH (Dear, Dastardly, Devoted, etc. Husband) and GS (Good Soul) as well as a very young son whom I call Babe (who has just come down with chickenpox 3 weeks before his vaccination, dammit!).

Storywise, I am posting (pending beta approval) an SS/HG/RL marriage law fic (really, it's a parody) titled Marry a Choice.  I'm proud of it.  It's very silly, in a black, twisted, melodramatic kind of way.  I'm also writing the same story from Snape's POV and posting here under Snape's Journal.  We'll see if other stories pop up as the muse strikes.

Basic, really.

The five most common phobias are:
1. Fear of snakes (ophidiophobia)
2. Fear of giving a speech (glossophobia)
3. Fear of heights (acrophobia)
4. Fear of rodents (musophobia)
5. Fear of flying (aviophobia)

Then there's:

Papaphobia—fear of the pope.
Scorodophobia—fear of garlic.
Pteronophobia—fear of being tickled with feathers.
Ranidaphobia—fear of frogs.
Philematophobia—fear of kissing.
Aulophobia—fear of flutes.
Ostraconophobia—fear of shellfish.
Graphophobia—fear of handwriting.
Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia—fear of long words (seriously).
Blennophobia—fear of slime.
Gerontophobia—fear of old people.
Peladophobia—fear of bald people.
Geropeladophobia—fear of old, bald people.
Phobophobia—fear of developing a fear.

People in New England obviously suffer from gephyrophobia - fear of bridges, judging by the lack of bridges to cross the numerous rivers and streams.  As a side note, here's the spellchecker's suggestions for the phobias listed.

ophidiophobiaoverdub, affidavit, adverb
glossophobiaglassful, classifies, classify, classifier, classifiable, classified, classifiers, classifier's
musophobiaMesabi, misfit, massif, missive, missives, massifs, misfile, misfire, massive, missive's, massif's
aviophobiaergophobia, Aviva, Avivah, Avivah's, Aviv, Aviv's, Aviva's

GerontophobiaGerundive, Gerundive's, Grandfather
PeladophobiaPlatform, Palliative, Plateful, Palliatives, Platteville, Pollutive, Palliatively
PhobophobiaFiberfill

It also had a problem with Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia, but surprisingly didn't have any suggestions.  Wonder why?

Snape's Journal

Dec. 14th, 1997

Joy to the World, the end is nigh.

We're supposed to attack Hogwarts on Christmas Eve.  The Dark Lord is completely lacking in the sense of humor department, and you'd think that by now I would know better than to snicker in front of him.  He always gets so defensive.

Bloody ingrate.

Snape's Journal made me laugh out loud when I read it today! It is refreshing my memory about MAC too, as I had forgotten when the attack on Hogwarts was.

I wonder if there is a word for the phobia of the fear of squishing spiders lest you hear them crunch!? I have that one bad! I swear I have to leave the room if someone wants to squish a spider because I will almost throw-up from the sound they make, and if by some horrible chance I have to do it, I either get some toilet paper and flush 'em down the toilet, or get something crackly to squish them with so I can't hear the sound! Yes, I do know I'm very weird! LOL!

Yay. I'm glad I'm not the only one. *sheepish grin*

I don't know if there's a phobia name for that, but if there is, I have a mild case of it as well, only it extends to all creepy crawlies. Yech, indeed! I tried googling "fear of straightforward routes," but came up negative, which is too bad. That's the best way to describe New England's road system.

Unfortunately, the Romans didn't have any obvious way to distinguish between straightforward and non-straightforward routes - all their roads had to be damn near straight, because their carts and carriages had almost non-existent steering. That's why so many of the roads in Britain are dead straight - they're built on the routes of old Roman roads.

Consider yourself lucky for that particular Roman influence. The cow paths that are now highways around here are murder to navigate. Even knowing how to navigate by the sky (day or night) doesn't help, as the climate, like yours, is often cloudy. Bah! Sorry, rant over now.

Well, I pretty much have all of the top 4 fears, in one form or another, just not bad enough to stop me from functioning.
Too bad about your son. With so many kids vaccinated these days, I didn't even know kids were coming down with real cases of chicken pox. (I vaguely remember having it when very young; I seem to recall being kept in a darkened room because there was a danger to your eyes with too much light (?); I'm not even sure if that's factual or one of the myths of my mother's generation.) Anyway, I hope Babe has a mild case and recovers quickly, for both your sakes.

I expect almost everybody has varying degrees of those fears, them being instinctual.

I was hoping Babe wouldn't get infected, especially as he was SO close to getting his vaccination. Sigh. I read up on CP a little tonight and the darkened room thing might stem from a mixup of cause and effect. You can become sensitive to light, but that's a sign of serious complications afoot (like encephilitis (sp)), so the logic was probably: avoid the light, and you avoid the complications... right?

It's too soon to say, but it looks like he might have a mild case. I'm knocking on wood. Thanks!

Oh, man. I remember the chicken pox (I hope your babe's is a mild case!) and I was stuck in the hospital for a bit (dehydration, the like).

With that said, I would think that aracnophobia (I'm too lazy for correct spelling) would be up in the top 5. I'm terrified, deathly, of spiders. They're horrible!

Yikes! That must have been a bad case of chicken pox! When I had it it just bummed me out because my family was on vacation and I was stuck in the room with my brother (who had strep throat) and all I could do was try not to scratch, while my sister got to enjoy the awesome skiing, and clubhouse, and social club... I was one bitter six-year-old.

I think they replaced aracnophobia with aviophobia, myself. I think more people are willing to admit they're afraid of flying now because it's a fear validated by the media, whereas being afraid of spiders is just silly, right? Live in Australia for any amount of time, though, and you learn to respect and fear spiders as much as snakes and crocs! That continent has some scary life on it!

Oh heaven's yes, 99% of the creatures whom could wander into your house are poisonous. And wait, I already do fear spiders! But crocs are cute, come on. So is Jeff Corwin, but he's not really a species.

As fair as I can tell (from the Latin roots), the H word actually means "fear of great big six-legged horses". It's blatantly made-up.

Of course it's blatantly made-up! I don't know latin, and am not great at etymology, but even I caught that. That's why it's so funny.

Hi, I just read your entry on the Friending Frenzy (on which I missed out) and really liked it. Plus, you like icecream, Snape and singing to yourself. We certainly seem to agree on the important points :-)

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and invite you over to read my handful of incredibly boring LJ entries if you like - maybe we have even more in common...

Well, we both have a snarky sense of humor, and "boring" lj's, so that's two more things in common! ;-)

No one ever called me snarky! I think I already love you :)
