It is such a blessing to have a child with a healthy immune system. I have no idea how we ended up with such a child, but I really am thankful!

When Babe woke up from his first nap, he went downstairs to watch some tv. Half an hour later, I heard him crying and reached the stairs just in time to see him kneeling onto the landing, a picture of exhaustion, mewing pitifully. Of course I ran down to him and did the whole motherly thing, picking him up (he's 39.8 lbs, btw) and cuddling him, and as I was carrying him upstairs, I noticed his head was awfully warm.

I set him down on the couch and went for the thermometer. In the twenty seconds I was gone, he'd slumped over and looked on the verge of tears again with his wobbly lower lip. I asked if he would consent to putting the thermometer under his tongue and was not surprised in the least when he refused vehemently. So, I stuck it under his arm. He screamed the entire time it was there, I think because it felt cold to him.

When I couldn't bear his screams anymore, I took the thermometer away and fortunately that was just as it beeped. 100.5 is high enough for my healthy boy to cause concern, so I immediately called the doctor's office, and, after the obligatory sentence of being put on hold, was told a nurse would call me back.

That was at 2:00. Babe was obviously in pain and miserable and burning up, so I gave him a small dose of ibuprofen and cuddled him until he fell asleep in a very awkward position, half on and half off me face down, his head being nearly smushed into the crook of the couch. But he seemed comfortable... I extricated myself and set about waiting for the phone to ring.

An hour and a bit later, though it seemed like it had been at least three hours, the nurse called back and fit me in to see one of the doctors half an hour later. Then I noticed that Babe was awake. Not only was he awake, but he was sweaty!

Sure enough, a hand on his head revealed that his fever had broken and he was now *gasp* hungry! He sat up and looked around with his normal bright, curious eyes and even deigned to smile. And without prompting, he said, "I'm better."

I took him to the doctor anyway, of course, but he seemed in perfect health. His ears were fine (better than most three-year-old's), no sores in his mouth, lymph nodes only slightly inflamed... And except for his unusually red lips and splotchy cheeks, he looked perfectly healthy, too.

So, yay!

When it comes to Babe's health, I'm usually not a worrywort. He's an obviously healthy child most of the time, big and strong and normal. He doesn't even usually have the peaky, stretched look that most three-year-olds have, though he has been a bit paler than I like (because we never go out...). Geoff is far more prone to worrying about Babe than I am, actually. But then, I don't equate worry with love. So seeing him today, worrying about him today, was an odd thing. But it seems I had reason to, even if it was but a momentary cause.

All's well for now, so that's great.

And in other happy news, congratulations to all my flist who won OWL awards. Ya'll rock!

Oh, and another yay for today is that Geoff was able to make it through a (nearly) full day of work! Whee! He's getting better, too!
