I think that possibly because there's just so MUCH of it, a large proportion of what is out there is of indifferent quality or worse.
I don't think it's unusual in you to be more critical in your reading, or to have reduced your exposure to the fandom and the ship. I've been having something like this conversation with others.
As for the ship, well, SSHG is very popular and can work very well, but its popularity is also its curse. There isn't a lot new that can be done with it; also the weaker writers (and even some of the strongere ones) will tend to fall into the same old tropes you have seen so often simply because they have come to dominate.
Any field will do this. I love fantasy, but there's very little out there that I find worth reading more than three chapters of. :-(
Don't sweat it. You'll either find something that sparks your enthusiasm in this fandom again, or you'll find something else. We change, and our perceptions and needs change.
Out of interest, which exchange fics have you liked so far? I'm way behind on the reading and could do with the odd rec.
