Need a post- vacation
Sep. 25th, 2005 04:50 pmWARNING! My brain has not yet returned from Colorado. Structure of the following writing may not make much sense. Sleep deprivation to blame. Or something.
Well, DH, Babe and I got back late Friday night, and I must say that although Babe was once again a great traveler, it was three hundred times easier traveling with DH there beside me. Babe was so happy to see DH again. He would follow his dad with those persistent thumps that mark a baby's presence, from room to room and scream whenever DH left his sight by closing a door. Very sweet, if a bit obnoxious.
Actually, it seems as though Babe only wants daddy. He was much quicker to panic if it was DH who left his sight rather than me. This was both nice and sad. Nice because it meant that I was able to escape for the occasional nap (and catch up to reach DH's level of exhaustion), but sad because it is obvious that Babe is Daddy's boy, and that he's pretty sick of that woman who cares for him. (I know that's not true, btw. He loves me, I'm sure (deep down), and he's just trying to get caught up from DH's week and a half absence. Perfectly reasonable behavior.)
The trip was really worth it if only to open the world of words to Babe. He got to cavort with six of his seven cousins, and seeing as four of those six are super talkative and rambunctious, Babe got to observe what normal children are like. He figured out that the best way to get attention, or to get something was to say something. Not that he used any real words (he's still a bit young for that), but his babbling has become more insistent.
Of course, he also got to observe one of his cousins being super obnoxious (as the parents commented, he was tired, and we weren't seeing him "at his best.") Babe watched his cousin intently throughout the meal, and by that evening we could see he had learned something from his observations. Most unfortunate. Hopefully, those traits will go away with time and distance.
I'm really glad to be home. It was great seeing everyone, but traveling cross country, then cross state like that is really exhausting. Especially when I had declared this a no traveling year. HA! This was trip two out of three, I believe. Possibly four, if all goes well.
I hope to catch up on sleep and sanity within the week. Hope, hope, hope.
Anyway, DH has just come into the room to tempt me with another episode of the new (only seen on the web with the right equipment or on the telly in Britain !Argh!) Dr. Who, so I have to go.
I'll be updating my story tonight, BTW.
Oh, and thought of another "lullabye" I can remember. "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess. Not exactly conducive to pleasant dreams, though, what with the minor key...
