Babe takes long naps. When he goes down it can be for as long as four hours, but he doesn't always like going down (heh, what kid does?). Today was one of those days he really objected, so DH put him "down" in his crib while he was here for a late lunch. Babe cried for about five minutes, rather half-heartedly, before succumbing to the sleep he desperately needed. When DH left for work an hour later, saying he'd be home in a couple of hours, there still wasn't a peep from Babe's room.

Anyway, Babe's been asleep in his room, on the second floor, for a few hours now, and I've been down in the basement keeping my ear out for his cries or the rattling of his crib (which I can hear via the duct-work). A few minutes ago I thought I heard something, so I went up the well-lit basement stairs to find the living room and kitchen completely dark. I had forgotten to turn on any lights before retreating to the den.

I heard another squeak, so I turned the corner to get to the second flight of stairs, and, in the space of a second, realized a few things. One, I didn't hear Babe rattling his crib vociferously, like he usually does when he wakes up. Two, the entrance, which is beside the opening for the up-stairs, seemed darker than usual, and three, there was something small and pale moving in an arc in the midst of all that darkness.

It took me another second before I realized that the motion was from a hand, and a largish person dressed in all black was blocking the entrance.

I gasped and jumped back, heart pounding. Then I heard my husband's laugh.

DH scared the crap out of me by coming home on time. =)
