Bemoaning ships
Mar. 1st, 2009 08:45 pmSS/HG is, with a few definite and excellent exceptions, boring me. The exchange has been good so far, and I've enjoyed many of the pieces offered there, but otherwise?
One trope after another. Most of the time Snape overreacts to his feelings and becomes stupid!Snape, which I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate. I don't like Hermione becoming a wimp or an idiot in the face of her feelings either, and that seems all too common, even when Snape remains in character.
I'm not about to turn to a different ship, either. Harry and Ginny would be the only tolerable canon pairing (I do like Hermione/Ron, but NOT as JK wrote them or set them up). I know many of you are into LM/HG, but I just can't buy it. First, Lucius is obviously in love with Narcissa, and she with him. Second, that's the only good thing I can say about Lucius.
Good looks and money do not a good enough pairing make, and they certainly don't change him from a pureblood elitist to a genuine mudblood lover. And Hermione isn't about to disregard his past or his ambitions. She's idealistic, not stupid.
Now, I know there are stories out there that make a good case, but... The brokenness on the parts of all the players needs to be so high that it's not fun to read in quantity, and it certainly isn't fun to think about. And I do think about stories after I read them. The ideas stick in my mind until they break down into digestible pieces of brain rot.
I used to read to the end of stories, even if I thought them descending into instant brain rot. I can't be bothered now. My inner compost bin is full.
There are some amazing stories out there, but, for the most part, I'm done. It doesn't inspire me to do anything more than push the back button, and the point of my reading fanfic is to be inspired creatively.
And I'm not going to delve into gen. My fascination with the HP universe is not overwhelmingly strong at this point.
*shrug*
I don't know. I'm probably just being hypercritical at the moment, but these aren't new thoughts, either. I guess I just want to see something inspirational again. Like it was before OotP. Something that makes my head spin and fingers itch.
Probably I just need to get out of the house. ;-)
