Erm... Recommendations, please?

So, research is coming in showing that there's identifiable, relevant-to-us, positive effects from playing (certain) video games, so I'm considering making a gaming system the Big family present this Christmas.

So, erm, what would you recommend? Both in terms of consoles and (non-violent/aggressive, kid-friendly) games. My only criterion is that it's under $500 by a lot (so the new Xbox One is not even close to being on the table). Preferably more in the $200 range.

Anyone?
