"You have no right to smile at me so sweetly!"
Professor Snape and everyone else within hearing range looked at Hermione with shocked expressions, though Snape's was mixed with confusion.
"Pardon?"
"Every night, it's the same damn thing!" Hermione said, pointing her finger at Snape accusingly. "You watch me and then when I catch you at it, you smile as if you actually like me. Well, I'm sick of it and want you to stop!"
"Professor Granger, I fear you must be mistaken. I do not smile. Not at you, not at anyone."
Hermione lifted her arms in a universal sign of appeal. "I know! That's why it's driving me batty!"
Snape leaned back in his chair, looking at Hermione with a peculiar expression on his face. "You must have been dreaming, Granger."
"Well of course I was dreaming!" Suddenly the color drained out of her face. "You mean I'm not dreaming now?"
Snape raised an eyebrow. Hermione could only blink in mortification.
"I don't suppose I could convince you to just forget I said anything?" she asked faintly.
His smirk was answer enough. But upon leaving the room, she looked back to find him watching her. And, before she could turn to flee, he smiled. Sweetly.
