I just finished "The Healing of America" by T. Reid. It's excellent -- simply excellent and I recommend it for anybody who is trying to figure out what it is that the US does and doesn't do and what other countries do (and don't do). He gives a thorough history (internationally) and up close and personal exploration of health-care systems in several other large, industrialized countries (France, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, to name a few). The exploration highlights similarities and differences, pros and cons.
What they all have in common is abject horror at the reality that in the US, people *die* because they're unable to afford to go to the doctor.
