So, Sunday morning, after playing hookie from church (well... more like kidnapping Geoff into an unplanned social visit as I collected a couple of books from a friend), the three of us left for Orono, Maine. For those of you unfamiliar with the name, it is used in crossword puzzles frequently enough for me to be familiar with it, but not often enough to remember why it is familiar. Turns out, it happens to be home to the University of Maine. Beautiful campus, btw. Quite a lot nicer than CU-Boulder (though probably not quite as nice as UVic or UBC).

Geoff had to work on Monday and Tuesday, which left Page and me to do whatever we liked which meant I got to read the two books I borrowed ("Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay") and Page watched more TV than was good for him. We also went swimming (which included a scary moment for Page when he flipped off a floaty thing at the 5 foot mark, though he managed to keep his head above water long enough for me to jump in and rescue him), went to Bangor's (pronounced Bang-Gor, from what I can tell) Discovery Zone Children's Museum, which happened to be right next door to the Indian place I'd forgotten my purse the night before.

So, basically, a nice relaxing vacation. For me and Page. Not so much for Geoff, though he was glad we were there.

We left the hotel this morning, getting home just in time for dinner. (We took the scenic route, adding about 3 hours to the travel time. It was worth it). I'm tired now. (I did most of the driving.) Even after two cups of coffee.

Pretty much right at the beginning of the trip I decided, for the sake of convenience and sanity, that I wasn't even going to try to stay on my diet very strictly. I managed, the first night, to do pretty well at the Mexican restaurant (ignoring the mystery seasonings), but the second and third nights I chose Indian and Thai cuisines, respectively. And I really enjoyed them. I did stay away from gluten rather religiously (though I forgot to ask for corn tortillas for Page the first night, and damn but he started coughing almost immediately. If that isn't an actual allergy, it's too damn close for comfort!), but let myself enjoy the rice. And dairy. I'll probably regret it in the next few days (hopefully not weeks), but it was nice having a few of the dishes I used to love so much. Especially the Thai green curry. As I was short on... well, everything, I added all the rice to dish, and this afternoon I had the leftovers; the rice had absorbed all the remaining liquid so it was like spicy rice pudding! With chicken. SO GOOD!

Tomorrow I go back to being very good. Alas. But my tummy will thank me for it.

As for the books... I'm still trying to decide whether I liked them or was just absorbed by them. I think I am a little too much like Katniss for comfort (emotionally) to actually hate the books, especially as I thought the story, the reasoning and the metaphors were quite well laid out. But, in the end, it's an amazing anti-revolution 'propos' (promotional spot) which leaves a twinge of revulsion. Who in their right mind (with full bellies) would ever be willing to go through that? Granted, that is the Capitol citizen in me talking...

I have a feeling I'll need to digest them a bit more.

Hope you all are enjoying your week. And may the heat-wave break and the power come back on!
