Rats make lovely pets. They also like to ride in pockets and on shoulders. I'd suggest getting females (less smelly), and probably getting three, so that if/when one dies (they are prone to cancers) the survivors will have company. They're pretty cheap to keep once one has the habitat. Oh, and make sure the cage is plenty big enough and has plenty to entertain the rats. They're curious, intelligent, inventive, and they CHEW.
