Frugality... kind of
Sep. 10th, 2007 04:02 pmEvery now and again I have these frugal moments. Like the other day, when I was stuffing my clone, I used all the smaller rags from the overflowing rag bag. Halfway through, I realized that the elastic from the underwear was still perfectly usable, so... out came the seam ripper and now I have several bands of elastic for whatever purposes (bungees, sewing, etc.). (Not to mention that I used rags rather than going out and buying ten big bags of fiberfill. I only needed two bags of fiberfill after all was said and done.)
Today the frugal sprit overtook me once again. I finally made the zucchini bread, which calls for one lemon, zest and juice. The lemon I'd gotten a week or so ago was starting to shrink and had gone too soft to grate the rind. Not wanting to give up on the zest, I juiced the lemon and then sliced it open and scraped out the pith and pulp, sliced it thinly and chopped it very finely.
I think that I will do that with every lemon from now on. It wasn't that much extra work, and I got two tablespoons of zest from one small lemon! And I didn't have to deal with the anxiety of scraping my knuckles on the grater, either!
I don't think I'm quite living up to that old saying, "Waste not, want not," but every now and again I have my moments. Of course, the lemon wasn't going to go to waste anyway. I'm kind of disappointed that nothing remains of it, so I can't stick it down the disposal to clean it. Ach well. I guess I'll just have to get more lemons in my life.
