I went to look at the flooring again, and not only was it prettier than I remembered, but there was enough. I don't know how long it will be on sale at the current price, but, well... Hopefully the supplies will last until we get one check or another.

At the same time, I'm starting to think I'm doing everything in the opposite order that it should be done. For example, the kitchen - which was supposed to be redone immediately after moving in, btw - should be done first, if only because moving appliances and stuff onto a brand new living room floor seems rather risky and, well, silly. But, well, the kitchen is going to cost a whole heck of a lot more than the living room floor, but the floor supplies won't last that long...

But, oh how I want a new kitchen! I spent a good part of today roaming about the internet, dreaming. Not fantasy dreaming, but more plotting dreaming. For instance, this is going to be my countertop, this will be the island top, something like this will do for the kitchen floor (edited to correct link), and then the cabinet doors will be a very simple Shaker style, painted just barely off-white.

For a kitchen remodel, we're looking at spending very, very little, since we plan to do (almost) all the work ourselves. But it's still more than we have at the moment, so it'll have to wait.

But, oh! The island top laminate is just about the same color (and 'species') as the living room floor I want, and I can just envision how well everything will flow together when it's all done! This place wouldn't look cobbled together any more, it would look classy! And I want to live in classy, dammit!

But I don't want to go in debt for it, either.

So I will be patient. And continue plotting. After all, by plotting this long, I've managed to cut the prospective costs in half. Of course, I've also given up dreaming in fantasy land...

What a coincidence. We spent a good part of the day talking flooring as well, but for the upstairs. Luckily, we have most of the supplies (tiles bought at clearance sales, and wood left over from a downstairs redo), so it's mostly figuring out when and how to install... (In your opinion, does it matter if hardwoods go lengthwise or crosswise in a hallway? Lengthwise is traditional, but crosswise I think would be easier for us to install.)

How happy for you that you have the supplies on hand! Of course, if they've been sitting around for ages...

I think it really does look better to install wood lengthwise down a hallway. Crossways is a bit easier to install (I'm guessing), but it gives a chopped up feel, like in those old, huge buildings they've converted into small living spaces. Besides which, it, erm, goes against the grain. (sorry...)

Living in a practical world is not as fun as living in a fantasy, is it.

My tax rebate is already gone and I didn't get anything fun or new.

Most definitely not as much fun, but at the same time, not quite as disgruntling. Sometimes it's just too much to come out of a fantasy and have to face the reality.

Although our tax rebate hasn't arrived yet, it has been reserved. And not for kitchen remodels, either. *sigh*
