Okay, I like Disney musicals as much (if not more) than the next girl, but I've gotta say that singing their songs is more than a little grating.

We're singing "Seize the Day" (from Newsies) for church in a couple of weeks, and it is so hard not to roll my eyes when we come to the inevitable, cheesy, overblown finish. In the musical, I'm sure it works (I actually never did see Newsies), what with dancing and choreography and all that jazz, but just standing in front of the congregation and singing "All foooooor oooooonnne, Oooonne for AAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL!!!!" three times in fff is just blergh inducing.

Of course, I felt the same way about singing "Circle of Life" last fall or whenever it was. I don't know, maybe I just don't think Disney(TM) and church go together very well... except... I am very tempted to recommend "April Showers" for some spring service sometime. I like that song and think it would work well in a choral setting. Though the storm part of it would be a bit cheesy, too.

Anyway, that's my rant for the evening.

If my church started singing Disney songs, I'd have to leave! :)

Definitely blergh *hugs you and sends you happy thoughts of Brahms* Mr. 42 and I were at the music store today picking out a song on the piano, but then he took away the music we were playing, and I found myself face to face with a Hannah Montana "Best of Both Worlds" songbook. I flipped it over, but it was no better. Finally, I asked Mr. 42 to get it away from me, which, bless him, he did. I haven't had patience with any Disney music since "The Little Mermaid," and that's totally because Ursula rocks my socks. And maybe the Gaston song, but I somehow doubt you'd get to do that or "Poor Unfortunate Souls" in church, unless it's one of the Hell and Brimstone places, which I don't picture you attending. ;)

No, no. I love Newsies but Seize the Day is one of the worst songs in it so I can understand your feeling of it being grating. Newsies is worth seeing if you like Disney or Christian Bale (he was sixteen or something when he did it).

I think my protest will be to just skip that day (like I did with Circle of Life), but yeah, I kind of feel the same way. ;-)

"Make the ugly go away! Please!" Yeah. That was very nice of Mr. 42.

Ah, Brahms... we don't get to sing much of his stuff. I'm not completely against singing pop stuff, though. For instance, we're going to sing "Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)" by Billy Joel this week, and I think that's just fine. But Billy Joel isn't quite so cheesy. Although I think it's a rather sad song to sing for Mother's Day...

Ursula was rather good. I wonder if they have an SATB arrangement of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" because that would be fun. I'm sure we could fit it into some service or another, even if it is ironical. ;-)

Newsies was one of the movies that I was ambivalent about when it came out, but wouldn't mind seeing now. Wonder if the library has a copy... Cause I do like Christian Bale (and Disney).
