Iron Man and Mother's Day
May. 12th, 2008 12:32 pmSo, my mother's day was really quite nice. I woke up early and got to church on time for choir practice (and was one of the few dressed warmly enough, because we'd left the windows open the night before and it was a balmy 53 F in the house, and the church hadn't turned on their heat). Geoff and Babe were still asleep when I left, so it was a rather uncomplicated morning, actually. That was the good part. Bad part was that I felt like crap after about 30 minutes and through the rest of the service, so I didn't get to enjoy the benefits of not having a little one to watch. *shrug*
I came home, and requested pancakes for breakfast (Geoff offered) which were yummy, and then, being cranky because I was still feeling crummy, I went up to bed and had a lovely two hour nap. I was woken up a few times because of various noises (Babe screaming, doorbell ringing, repeatedly in quick succession (grr...), kids screaming, etc.) but was able to get back to sleep, surprisingly enough.
Actually, I was very surprised when Geoff woke me up at 4 to tell me he'd dropped Babe off at the babysitter's and that if we hurried, we could make the movie.
I didn't really hurry, though. He started rubbing my feet, and I am not about to rush through that. Nope!
We did get moving fairly soon, though, and managed to make it to the theater just as the movie itself was starting (15 minutes after the posted starting time). There were some good seats left in the middle section, and it all just worked out perfectly (well, except for the price... aren't matinees supposed to be cheaper? Good gracious!).
So we enjoyed Iron Man. We tend to gravitate to the comic book movies (heck, I even saw Sin City, which is not my preferred fare), so I know what to expect. Suspension of disbelief is necessary for the enjoyment of the movies, even if it's only suspending the disbelief that, in this case, someone as smart as Stark could be so incredibly naive as to believe his incredible wealth came only from the US government. Uh-huh. Sure.
But, given that naivete, I can work with the logic of Stark's plan being for his redemption, and not being merely revenge or vigilante-ism. In the real world, the logic wouldn't fly, but in Comic Book Movieland, it works. Besides which, who wouldn't want to be in Stark's position of being able to right major wrongs?
The thing I really enjoyed about the movie, though, was the intelligent script. Stark and Pepper Pots' characterizations and relationship wasn't just the typical comic book type thing, which was a really, really nice change of pace. I loved that there was mutual respect. I loved how Pepper was competent (with exception to the mincing along in high heels... but, as Geoff said, it was a funny scene). I loved how Pepper put Stark in his place at the end. I loved that they didn't ever get that kiss, and for all the reasons that Pepper laid out at the fundraiser. Granted that it's a given that in the sequel something will probably happen... Although if they're smart, they'll go The Avengers route and play on the chemistry and UST for as long as possible.
So anyway, I enjoyed the movie and the day quite a lot. We'll have to see what movies will be around for my birthday. :-)
