I have an odd mix of songs running through my head. A Space Oddity (Bowie) has been on the radio quite a lot lately, and it segues surprisingly neatly into Ragdoll (Aerosmith) which I happened upon tonight. At least they blend together neatly in my head. ;-)

[livejournal.com profile] maebynot recently posted about five songs she can't listen to, and since reading her post, I've been trying to compile my list of five songs that I just cannot stand. I figured I'd confine it to the genre(s) I normally listen to on the radio, as there are way too many songs in pop, jazz and punk that are annoying enough to make me consider violent acts. (Note: There are many songs in pop, jazz and punk that I do enjoy. And I'm greatly oversimplifying the genres, btw.)

I still haven't come up with a complete list, but here goes what I have come up with:

Five(?) Songs I Cannot Physically Listen To

1. Seventeen - Stevie Nicks. It is too long. It is too repetitive. It is too... too. It doesn't help that I consistently mishear the chorus as being "Just like the one winged dove, sings the song sounds like she's singing, ooh, baby, ooh, ooh." The picture that brings to mind is not pretty. It's actually really horrid and pathetic.

2. Any power ballad by Journey, but especially Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'. Actually, there are very few Journey songs played on the radio that I like. There are a few I can get into, but only a few. Much like -

3. James Taylor. The only songs of his that are played on the stations I listen to are the really horrid, craptastically nauseating ones, like Fire and Rain. Yes, of course you've seen fire and rain. EVERYONE HAS! I don't know. When he rocks, he can lay out a tune masterfully, but when he's mellow, it makes me sick. And what I want to know is why are the mellow ones being played on the stations I listen to? You play "Tom Sawyer" and "Back in Black" and then "Fire and Rain"?!?!? COME ON PEOPLE! (Granted I haven't heard those three songs in one set. Yet.)

4. ...

I know there are others, but I can't think of them right now. And no wonder. It's past my bedtime.

Agreed on Journey.
I don't like that particulular James Taylor song, but I do like a bunch of his mellow ones. "Carolina in my mind" is one of my favorites. And "Sweet Potatoe Pie", with Ray Charles.

What songs make me change the radio setting ASAP (and I am also going on the assumption that this is a song they would play - can't stand hardcore, for example...but they wouldn't play that on my stations) ?

- Roxanne by the Police. Love the Police. Can't stand the song.
- Ice, Ice Baby. For some reason, my station has started playing Vanilla Ice again. WHY?????
- Leroy, the Redneck Reindeer. For some reason they like to play it on Christmas. A lot. They really shouldn't.
- totally oversung pop diva ballads.
- Black Horse and the Cherry Tree. Hate it.

Funny. "Ice, Ice Baby" was one of the first songs that popped into my head as being intolerable. Worst thing about it is that it has the same intro as Queen's "Under Pressure", which is a good song! Fortunately, the stations I listen to don't ever, ever play Vanilla Ice, so I don't have to worry about that. :-)

Same with oversung pop diva ballads. Ballads in general are iffy with me. There are some I like and/or tolerate, but most are... ick.

I don't know Black Horse and Cherry Tree, and don't listen to the radio enough at Christmas to hear Leroy (besides being in the wrong neck of the woods for redneck songs), but I do like Roxanne. Not love, but like. "Every Breath You Take", however...

Thanks.... guess what is now running through my head at work?

I'll have to listen to both of those back to back when I get home....

Sorry. It's just... "Planet Earth is blue, and there's nothing I can do..". dundadunda dun *clap clap* dundadundadun

"Ragdoll, living' in a movie
Hot tramp, daddy's little cutie..."

They go together! They do! They just merge.

(Sorry)

Heh ... I heard both "Space Oddity" and "Don't Stop Believin'" today at some point and thought of you. :)

Wholeheartedly agree with "Fire and Rain". He just sounds so whiny in that song.

"Don't Stop Believin'" is one of the Journey songs I can tolerate, but only if I'm in the right mood. Which is rare.

If it weren't for "Fire and Rain", I might not get the jibblies whenever I hear his voice. But I do. Alas.
