Well, no parallel processing for me today. After much thinking, experimenting and guessing, Geoff figured out what the wiring problem is: too much on one load. Turns out that all the outlets, including one for the fridge and one for the microwave, and one set of lights are on the same breaker. Considering we have not blown that breaker, which is something of a miracle, Geoff thinks that some wires got melted somewhere along the way. Not melted enough to go up in flames, nor melted enough to stop any of the outlets from working, just melted enough to freak out the newly installed GFCIs.
So... we have to run a new line. Fortunately, we have room in our breaker box to do so. Barely. Also fortunately, we have a false ceiling so running the new line shouldn't be too much of a problem. 'Too much' being the key phrase.
I have long suspected that the wiring in this place was crappy, but now I'm starting to think it's creepy. However, rewiring the entire place is not in our budget at this time, so we'll just have to hope it lasts a little longer.
Geoff was certain that we'd come across some nightmare or other. Things had been running pretty smoothly, considering. Ach well. At least this problem is something Geoff has knowledge and experience with.
So, anyway, today I have to move the bookshelf that is halfway blocking one screw of the breaker box. It kind of pisses me off that I need to move the entire unit because of half an inch (if that) blockage, but there you go. It could be worse.
But oh, we are so tired. Geoff especially, though allergies and exertion are really starting to kick my butt, too. At least the neighbor kids' enthusiasm for helping out has mellowed Babe's opinion on the whole matter. He's not nearly as upset as he was at the beginning of the weekend. In fact, he's hardly upset at all, except for a mild rebuke here and there about his kitchen being gone.
Anyway, that's the news from here. Exciting, I know.

Date: 2008-09-02 05:26 pm (UTC)When we were looking at places, there was one single family house that was within our price range, but I didn't even want ot look at it, because it was old (built around 1900) and the advert said it needed an electrical update. That was enough to warn me off it. I just imagined it being a tinderbox.
