Oh, dear flist, please help me out!

So, the end of the month is drawing near, and with it come a couple of deadlines. One I won't mention because I'm still in denial mode about it, but the other is the little show I'm putting up in the church. It needs to be put up either the 31st or the 1st. That's a week away.
So, anyway, what I need help with is what to show. I think I have a decent selection arranged, but I would like your opinions.
First, here are the paintings I have at my disposal that have not been shown publicly (at the church, anyway):
1.

Oil, 8x10
2.

oil, 8x10
3.

oil, 11x14
4.

oil, 16x20
5.

oil, 17x17
6.

oil, each 18x24
I don't think they all go together very well, myself, soooooo
I'll complement them with photos.
Here are the photos I'm thinking of using:
7.

8.

9.

10.

11.

My thoughts are to use paintings 3-6, with 3 and 4 being questionable, and all the photos, which will all either be 8x10 or 11x14. What say you?

Date: 2008-10-24 09:20 pm (UTC)I can't really advise on selections, though I'd agree that the first two don't go with the others.
Don't like the cabbage photo much - not a fan of purple, and I don't think this particular purple goes with the other pictures. The first photo of the climbing plant - what IS that, and how do I kill it? It's bloody invasive and grows all over our house every year and I have to cut it back every two weeks during the summer. I realise that this is not mightily helpful, but....

Date: 2008-10-24 09:32 pm (UTC)I'm waffling on the cabbage (actually, it's kale) picture, but it does go relatively nicely with both #'s 7 and 4, though painting #3 segues just as nicely, if not more so.
*sigh*
I wish I had my vacation photos available. I know there are a couple of photos in there that would look quite nice with all of these. Oh well.

Date: 2008-10-24 09:42 pm (UTC)Yeah, I have a few too many paintings titles that right now. And I don't want to just number them...

Date: 2008-10-24 10:08 pm (UTC)Isn't numbering paintings terribly postmodern or something?

All the photos, sure - they go well together.

Date: 2008-10-26 02:50 am (UTC)I agree. Thanks!

Date: 2008-10-25 01:21 am (UTC)I'm quite fond of #2, though I can see why you might leave (leaf) it out. It reminds me of things about the east coast that I liked. The Hudson, namely, even though I'm fairly sure that's not it's subject.
And the triptych... it's gorgeous! I think your instincts are right. Your audience will always be less critical than you are.

Date: 2008-10-26 02:55 am (UTC)Thank you! I'm quite fond of #2 as well. It's actually from a photo of a bay by Victoria, but it does have that muted, subtle Eastern effect, doesn't it? I'm glad I chose not to auction it off.
Yay! I'm glad you like it. I'm still not completely satisfied (and it isn't actually finished), but... Well, a friend suggested I show it as a diptych of the first and third and have the middle one be independent. It does work better that way (which is the benefit of having three independent canvases).
Thanks again!

Date: 2008-10-26 03:15 am (UTC)boy, those sentences don't make any sense, but that's the best I can do to explain that I really like the triptych!
ps - I also really like photo #7, although I like all the photos. I think it's the blend of colors in #7.

Date: 2008-10-25 11:21 am (UTC)That said, if nothing else you should display painting number 4, so choose things that will go well in a display with it.
I also very much love #2, but I'm easily seduced by sunsets.

I also love #2 very much, but it doesn't go with this show. Perhaps the next one...

Date: 2008-10-31 02:31 am (UTC)3 is different. If you have to drop one I'd say that one.
4 is glorious - I see sky and water equally.
5 contrasts well with 4
I really like 6 and think they do work together precisely because of the lack of symmetry. It looks like a wood looks - if you see what I mean.
Out of the photos, I'd say 7 doesn't fit. Dunno if it's how it looks here, but it lacks the drama of the rest. And that cabbage rocks!
Good luck!
