Yes and no. I had pretty free rein, but there was a staunch core of respect. They respected me and my decisions, and in return, I respected them and their feelings.

Of course they do. Looks is a language in itself. Just with looks alone, you can tell whether a person is happy, sad, healthy, sick, fractured or any other kind of state. Looks matter very much.
Now, if you're asking whether looking good matters, that's another question altogether, and a rather silly one at that. Though, yes, it sure would be nice if everyone looked their healthiest.
