Teenagers tend to be terribly narrow-minded. Yes, this probably wouldn't happen in a Midwestern Southern Bible Belt school (yet), but it shows that the mindset has already turned in many places and is turning everywhere else.

David Levithan wrote a book about this in one of YA's first positive gay love stories called Boy Meets Boy.

However, if you're going to read just one of his books I recommend Realm of Possibility, which is twenty poetic vignettes on teens crossing barriers to find connection.

When I was in high school we protected a friend who came out and was subject to harassment and beatings as a result. He dropped out. But kids going to the same schools I went to are now openly gay (or bisexual... everyone is bisexual these days), which tells me that we have come a long way in just 15 years.

Boulder is supposed to be pretty liberal, right? Has always been, right? But I had two friends who did suffer for being gay (one openly, the other still closeted but flaming). I have no idea what the school atmosphere is now, but I'm guessing it's becoming more and more normal.

I think it's incredibly encouraging. Prop 8 passed, but it's only a matter of time before the GBLT community has full social rights, and not just in Liberal bastions.

Off topic, but who calls their daughter "Unique Payne"? Shouldn't that count as parental abuse?
