1. "Eh, poo."
Well, I won't be going to Buffalo with Geoff in September. :-( I was hoping to go see Niagara Falls again, and
darth_kittius gave me some excellent suggestions on what to do and where to eat while there...
But I have an important appointment that, if I rescheduled it, would have to be moved out by at least a month.
Poo poo poo poo poo.
*big sigh*
On the plus side, it's possible that Babe would freak at Niagara because it's just so loud. But, but, but... Oh well. Another week without Geoff. His traveling should taper off as we move into Fall.
2. "Happy"
Yesterday was awesome. A few days ago (when I found out), I put out a request for playdates this week because Geoff will be out of town (he left this morning) and Babe was an anxious mess when he went out of town for a day last week. I got two responses, one for yesterday and another for tomorrow.
Yesterday was spent with G, whose children are now grown, but her baby sister was visiting with her 3.5 yr old. OMG. They hit it off from the start, and, except for a couple moments in the car on the way home from swimming, had a blast the entire day.
And yes, we went swimming. At a "members only" lake (which is so weird in my mind, but hey). It was beautiful. The day was incredibly hot, and the water was warm enough that I was able to be in it for, oh, an hour or so? A loooong time, anyway. I now understand the New England culture of swimming in lakes. Some, of course, aren't tenable, but lakes like this one are gorgeous.
And Babe didn't even freak at the "seaweed" that got kicked up. I think the lack of clam necks (and the presence of sand) was enough to reassure him that it was safe at the lake. *shakes head*
Anyway, after we had bathed for a long while, we went back to G's place for dinner. Which was absolutely delicious. Simple pasta thing of (brown rice) pasta, smoked mozzarella and sauteed veggies (zucchini, onions, tomatoes and basil) with swiss chard on the side (or on top), but oh my gosh, it was good! I think it helped that I was hungry from the swimming, and the company (G, her husband, Sister, Niece, S, M, Geoff and, late arriving Son) was so relaxed and lively and fun.
G offers so incredibly much. I'm still trying to figure out what I can or do offer her. Besides Geoff's wit, that is. ;-)
Anyway, it was a delightful day ending with me going to bed before Geoff (though still too late) and sleeping the sleep of the well-swum.
Oh, and I think I may have got yet more evidence that I really do have a paradoxical reaction to sunscreen. An hour or two spent in or around the water with the sun shining down all the time gave me a very slight burn while half an hour in the sun in Canada with 30 spf sunscreen gave me a stinging burn.
I think I shall forgo sunscreen except the heaviest duty stuff in the sunniest regions. Like Colorado,or the beach, where it does serve me well.

Date: 2009-08-19 03:04 pm (UTC)Sunscreen is a swindle, imo. I burn even with factor 50. So I just try to stay out of the sun as much as possible, and particularly between 12 and 5. If I can't, then it's sleeves down to elbows and a hat, and put up with the sweating - :-(
