(Nothing to do with me personally, don't worry. Just a friend/acquaintance has gone all suicidal and I just don't have the emotional wherewithal to talk to or with him as he needs. And Geoff is out of town. And... and if I call the police, or whoever on him, he WILL hate me forever and possibly take it out on us.

Fuck.

I gave him the number for a counseling center, but I doubt he's going to call. He's pretty determined to fuck his life up at the moment. He says his life is over.

Fuck.

Any idea what I should do?)

If you think he's serious, particularly if he's said anything about having a specific method in mind, call the cops anyway.

I'm not sure how serious he is, but he is impulsive (though I don't think there's danger of him killing himself tonight)...

Tell him that it is not worth it. He will look back on the matter in a years time and think how stupid he was to even think of suicide. People have it heaps worse then him.

It's a hard one to call. On the one hand, you can't actually stop someone from doing something that they want to do, but if he's depressed then he's not going to be in the right frame of mind to take the sensible decisions. You really wouldn't want his death on your conscience, but neither can you stop him. It's a job for professionals.

If you're fairly certain that he's not a danger to himself tonight, then you've got time to persuade him to try counselling. DO you have the Samaritans over there?

He called you, so he may want help. It's probably too late due to time difference, but call the hospital or the cops. I don't know about you but I'd rather be hated than feeling like I have someone's death on my conscience.

I think if you let yourself say you "don't have the emotional wherewithal" to help him, and then something happens, you're not going to forgive yourself. Suck it up. Help your friend. I'm with the folks who think the best help you can give him is to call the suicide hotline yourself and ask advice.

Too late to offer advice I imagine, so I offer hugs and the reminder that while he is your friend, he is also responsible for his own actions; you can try to help one way or another, but if he's determined to fuck up or end his life, there's not much you can do to prevent him. Please do not hurt yourself trying.
