Dreams

Been having crazy dreams again. Last night was a mix of surreal and whimsical characters with somber reflections.

First came a dream about flirtation that got out of hand (I was a third-party observer, though it felt directed at me, as if the flirter was trying to make a point (that he really didn't need to make, the dumbass)).

Then I dreamt a friend died, and I was compelled by my respect for her spirit to dance at her wake. (I ended up doing a tango with Snape. Poorly.)

And then, aaaahhh, I dreamt about the Pacific.

Geoff and I were looking for a service station that had a play space. We'd found one in Colorado somewhere* along the front range, but it was a scary place, with a climbing-wall ramp that inspired a case vertigo in me. Geoff and Babe were fine, but I was left shaking. (It wasn't quite as scary as I had thought, as there was a ledge to keep the kiddies from falling to their deaths, but as that ledge was open, it didn't inspire much confidence.)

So, I thought sand and beach might be nice. I looked at the map we had that marked all the service stations. That's when I discovered Oklahoma had an oceanfront. A little, tiny spit of Oklahoma split California in two.

I zoomed in on the map to see what was going on and found that "Oklahoma" wasn't even a quarter mile wide, and it was mostly uninhabitable being made of delta silt. However, when I zoomed in even further, I noticed a town on the coastline. It was a small town, but it looked like it might have sand beaches.

It being a dream, we were there the next minute, looking around. Geoff stayed with Babe and the truck while I looked for a playground. And beach.

As I was walking around the commercial area, I came across this beautiful little spit of land that almost paralleled the ocean. It was completely natural, with no interference from mankind. The trees and brush grew wild over the rocks and lichen, and the sun sparkled on the water as it lapped the narrow shore. It was an idyll, and oh, it tempted me. As I neared it, with the intent of stepping in, I caught sight of sandy space further down the shore that looked like it might fit Babe's needs better, so I trotted off.

The area, which was a public space, was surrounded by a curved adobe wall. It opened up into a very large courtyard made up of sand, swings and benches. Surrounding the courtyard were little buildings of various uses: bathrooms, kitchenettes, lockers. Beyond the bathrooms was the beach.

The most interesting thing about the beach was the polished purple basalt on the water's edge. It should have looked ugly, like dog shit on the sand, but it didn't. It was smooth and had a lovely sheen that caught the afternoon sun in a friendly way. I climbed up on it, savoring the feel of the surface, and slid down its sides, which were perfect slides, feeling like a kid again.

Finally, I made my way to the water. The beach was smooth sand until the waterline, then it became course sand and smooth gravel. That and the foot-high drop-off almost put me off going into the water, but I stepped in and marveled at the warmth. It was nearly body temperature!

A stranger was lounging in the water nearby and heard me exclaim about the warmth. She commented that it was actually a little on the cool side, but it was nice, wasn't it?

I told her that coming from the Atlantic seaboard, it was unbelievably warm.

And then the dream got very strange, involving muppets, gang wars (targeting the muppets for unpaid gambling debts?) and chewing gum on shoes.

It ended happily enough, thanks to a Romeo and Juliet type love affair. And no, I am not being facetious about the happiness. No suicides or death or anything.

So anyway. Weirdness. And hopefully I'll get less weird and more peace tonight. Maybe go for a swim off that Oklahoma beach...
