When we walk
when we sleep
when we rise
we are one

When we laugh
when we sing
when we cry
when we run
we are one

And we shall love one another
with all our hearts
and we shall care for each other
with all our soul
and our might

when we stand
when we fall
when we rise
we are one

in the cold
in the heat
in the dark
in the sun
we are one

And we shall love one another
with all our hearts
and we shall care for each other
with all our soul
and our might

When we're hurting one another
that's the way we hurt ourselves
with our sisters and our brothers
we will
We Will Rise!

And we do
and we try
we must live
or we die

we will reach
we will climb
we will rise
we will fly
we are one

And these words shall be forever
within our hearts
And we shall teach them to our children
and remember them
in our lives

when we walk
when we sleep
when we rise
we are one

when we laugh
when we sing
when we cry
when we run

We are strong
We belong
We are one!

My life flows on in endless song
above earth's lamentation
I hear the real though far off hymn
that hails a new creation

No storm can shake my inmost calm
while to this rock I'm clinging
It sounds an echo in my soul
how can I keep from singing?

What though the tempest round me roars
I know the truth it liveth
what though the darkness round me close
songs in the night it giveth

(ATB:No storm can shake my inmost calm,
while to this rock I'm clinging)

Since love is Lord of heav'n and earth
How can I keep from singing?

(ooos)
(TB: When tyrants tremble sick with fear
and hear their death bells ringing)
And friends rejoice both far and near
How can I keep from singing?

In prison cells and dungeon vile
our thoughts to them are winging
When friends by trial are undefiles
how can I keep from singing?

How can I keep from singing?

I love "How Can I Keep From Singing." A beautiful song with thoughtful, complex words, and a sentiment that we can all use while clinging to our various rocks. I don't know "We Are One." Do you recommend it?

I found out that we're expected to have "Java Jive" memorized for our June PWC concert and Eric Whitacre's "Cloudburst," at least for the snapping, slapping, and clapping bits. The former will be much easier, I think :D

I love it too, except when it's sung as a dirge. Which we tend to do. :-( "We Are One" is fun to sing, though not at all complex, and perhaps a little overlong when listening to it.

http://www.koober.org/ (the Jan. 18, 2009 performance is best for sound quality and tone) The composer is Brian Tate, though I didn't much care for the performances that came up.

Normally we perform with music, but these songs are for a special concert a fellow choir member organized to benefit the local women's shelter (spurred by the murder of his friend's daughter). The other choirs who will be performing normally don't use music, so... well, we just want to fit in with the cool kids. ;-)
