What the hell does "Social Conservative" mean, nowadays?

Yes, this is a sour grapes post, but honestly, how is going off, leaving your very young children in ANY WAY holding to social conservatism?

Yes, women should be able to hold any job/career/office they want. But if one says family comes first, shouldn't one ACT like it does?

I think what they mean by "social conservatism" is they they are anti-gay anything (rights, discrimination, marriage) and anti-choice. I'm also going to take a pretty accurate guess and she thinks sex ed should not be taught in school, creationism taught along evolution (with the emphasis that evolution is merely a theory and can't be proven), and that "family is first."

I don't mind the family is first part, but like you said, if she's going to tout it, don't ditch the kid.

I find the "Conservative" label and the "Liberal" label are just too damn confining for any set of values I have. I don't fit into either and I dislike both Republicans and Democrats.

Yeah, that about sums it up. Although I'll give her the benefit of the doubt on the creationism bit.

Even though I joke about being a "Total Fucking Pinko Commie," that label doesn't really fit me, either. I'm a bit of a stick in the mud about some issues that go against social liberalism, and am actually growing quite conservative (pragmatic) about fiscal matters.

Labeling is a useful tool, but easily abused, like so many things, to make war. Us vs. Them, ya know.
