I'm doing the prep work for doing our taxes, and it turns out we spent about $9500 out-of-pocket medical expenses this year.

That's not counting the insurance premiums, though it is counting the deductible.

Bother. It really is my fault that we're poor. *shrugs with an eye tic thrown in*

Now, come ooooonnn big tax refund! *rolls dice with the Republicans*

I can't read that it's your fault you're poor because you have health trouble and not react. It's not your fault. The system should be more helpful.

Yes, the system should be more helpful, or, you know, humane, but within this system, it is my fault.

That's not to say I'm castigating myself (too much) about it. Or at least, not for that reason. I save that for being utterly useless due to the poor health. ;-D

I was mostly joking, you know. (And I am so incredibly grateful to be in a position to joke. I am damned lucky that my health woes are so (relatively) mild and inexpensive and that my parents are there and willing to bail us out. I feel horrible about being such a leech, but I am an extremely grateful leech.)

However, I keep posting updates with the hopes of possibly changing some minds where universal health care is concerned. The US is so barbaric in this regard...
