Okay, the computer is still messed up, but there are two more clues.

One is that the fafsa review page wouldn't open because it said adobe acrobat was open. Acrobat was not open according to the desktop (and task manager, as far as I can guess at this point... though right now task manager is showing a lot of programs running that aren't, like two open office programs (one .bin, one .exe), plugin-container.exe, HPAdvisor.exe and about a dozen others...).

Second clue is that I was watching a youtube video and navigated away in mid stream. The sound continued. Even after I closed that browser tab.

What the hell is going on? What settings could be messed up? Could it be that flash is completely fubar and I need to uninstall and reinstall adobe?

If you have any ideas about what's wrong, please send them my way!

I assume you've rebooted, and that did nothing.

So, what version of acrobat are you running? What problems do you have?

Are you looking at the programs or hte processes tab of task manager - sometimes it can freeze because the updater is constantly trying to update.

I assume anti virus scan has brought nothing up.

You could try scanning with http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php as well.

Acrobat X. I hadn't noticed any problems until the gov. page wouldn't load with the excuse of acrobat blocking its way. (It asked to close acrobat.) The only reason I think there's a problem with flash is because the download time for everything internet related slowed down dramatically after the last update (and computer "clean-up" by Geoff).

Processes, though the the computer and firefox haven't actually crashed (that I can remember) since the problems began. I just opened it to see what was running.

Of course. I'll try that malware thing as well, though. Thanks.

There's this as well

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/download

It can look at the registry, and clean up installs of things.

If that fails, then yes, reinstall all adobe products, including flash.

Instead of reinstalling Acrobat, after uninstalling it, install Foxit. Be careful with Ccleaner: it's a bit enthusiastic at erasing cookies. When it says it's erasing the IE cookies, it's also erasing the FF and Chrome ones.

The sound continues after you navigate away because the browser has cached some of the sound file. Otherwise, when you listen to a sound file, it would be jerky. Not to worry.
