Heeeeeeeeeeeeen!

I'm pleased with myself that I managed to get some of the items crossed off my to do list considering that I didn't get started till after I picked Page up from school (where they'd had cupcakes to celebrate St. Patrick's Day... I knew there was a reason I celebrate the Orangemen instead), as I successfully went back to sleep and slept through the entire morning. Granted, I dreamt about what happened after my abortive nap, but what the hell, it was sleep. And it helped.
And I'm doubly pleased with myself that one of the things accomplished was making dinner. On a whim I added some of the (freshly roasted) butternut squash to the ground beef and garlic, and boy were those burgers moist and tender! An excellent way of getting a veggie Page doesn't like into him!
I'm not pleased that I woke up from my nap with my left eye gummed up and red and scratchy. I've determined that I can't read small print books again until I get my new glasses. It's too hard on my eyes. Boo. (I read myself to sleep.)
Fortunately, the algebra text is perfectly readable (though my writing tends to be on the small side) so I'm continuing with that. Almost done, now. After I've completed this book (tomorrow), I'll pick up a book of practice tests to really get it drummed into my head. And seeing as ten days is plenty of time to practice for the real test, I think I will do okay (as long as I do practice every day (which, given that I'm enjoying it, shouldn't be a problem) to keep it fresh in my mind).
And have I mentioned lately how Spring is nearly here? I've told Page that we'll be walking to school again starting next week. All but one pile of south-facing ice is gone from the sidewalks, and that pile should be gone after this weekend of 50+F weather!
Now is the time to really get my garden plan in gear and price out everything we're going to need to get it looking good. I'm actually really excited about this growing season. It'll be expensive and loads of hard work, but it will make this place so much more my home, as well as improve the neighborhood. And as long as front-end loaders and men with big stompy boots stay off my ferns and heucheras, I will be happy.
Now I'm off to look at pictures of carefully planned hills and dales. La!

Date: 2011-03-18 07:23 am (UTC)It sounds as though things are pretty positive for you at the moment - I'm glad!
I haven't had butternut squash for ages - we used to make curry out of it.

Date: 2011-03-19 07:18 pm (UTC)Pretty much positive. If I could get a restful night of sleep, things would be far more positive, though. ;-j
It's strange, but squash is one of those plants I've found grow better some places than others. Acorn squash, hubbard and pie pumpkins grow REALLY well here (they are incredibly good), while the butternut is comparatively meh. However, where my parents live on the west coast, their butternut is OMG!Delicious, whereas their acorn is meh. I wonder which are the best squash in Europe.

Date: 2011-03-19 07:41 pm (UTC)Shops and restaurants specialising in vegetarian and vegan fare generally have a little more choice.
Once I have a garden, I might look into growing some butternut, maybe.
