Randomness
Apr. 13th, 2011 11:39 amOn Saturday, a neighbor organized an Easter egg hunt for the kids in the neighborhood. It was really nice of her, and Page was completely into it. Bouncing up and down counting the minutes into it. Our next door neighbors were a bit late and missed out on the fun, so I suggested to Page that he go hide some of his eggs (specifically the ones with candy in them) for those two, which he gleefully did. I think he had as much fun hiding the eggs for neighbor kids as he had finding them.
The reason I bring this up, however, is because the organizing lady (I'll call her K) took a picture of me and Geoff. It is, I believe, one of the worst pictures taken of me since that horrible monstrosity from 3rd(?) grade.
It's hilarious.
My vanity is currently prevailing over my sense of humor in the battle of whether to share the image with you, but I will say the lighting was very unfortunate. I look like I only have one (very large) tooth, among other faults. (Maybe I should use it as my "this is who to look for" photo for the con? Hee!)
Healthwise, it rather amazes me how much energy is needed to heal. I'm on round 2 of the detox/debugging treatment, and my energy has dropped to sloth levels again. It's only temporary and I'm not at all discouraged because my eyes are so much lighter, but geez. My body is rather forceful about getting the needed rest.
Page, meanwhile, is eating us out of house and home. He must be growing again. I'm still thrilled to pieces, though, that he's taking second and third helpings of broccoli, and second and third helpings of fish, even if he is picky about most everything else. I need to figure out a way to get more legal carbs into him, however. Without us going through a batch of muffins every day.
Speaking of Page, I think he's made another psychological shift and is closer to the 7-9 group now. He's still a baby in many ways, but he's getting there. The day before yesterday, for example, when I was really, really angry, he was chattering away at me until I asked him for a time out (for me). Which he respected. He even caught himself when he started to chatter again.
I was impressed. He's also been more helpful and, for the most part, respectful. I'm loving it (and him, obviously, but that never was in question).
That said, I am really looking forward to the end of April, which is spring break. I signed Page up for camp, which, thank goodness, is located at his school rather than a school across town. I think he's going to have a blast. I feel slightly guilty at raiding his account to pay for it, but since that money was given to us for him, I'm not feeling too guilty. Especially as there will be archery and rockets. Nuff said? I think so. All of us will be better off with him there.
Especially since the last two days, I'll be gone! Whee!
As the conference gets closer, I'm getting a classic case of approach/avoidance going on, but I am excited. And I am going, no matter how anxious I become. I do assume you all will forgive me a bit of foot-in-mouth disease. I'm terminally shy, so I'm prone to bursts of inappropriateness when I do finally decide to talk. Please assume I do not mean any insult. (That goes for most of what I write, as well, with obvious exceptions for Teabaggers and such idiocy.)
Ah, and that segues into politics nicely, doesn't it?
My state (and possibly entire country) is made up of idiots. We'll see how idiotic they are come next November, but, honestly... How... Why did they vote such thugs into office? I can't say I'm thrilled with the Democratic party nowadays (less than thrilled is putting it mildly) but the majority of the Republicans in office are just thugs. Robber barons, really. And boy, are they robbing us.
*rants* *snips rant*
*rolls eyes* Barbarians. Total barbarians. Needless to say, I reposted this on FB:
Remember when the teachers, public employees, Planned Parenthood, NPR and PBS all crashed the stock market, wiped out half of our 401Ks, took trillions in TARP money, spilled oil in the Gulf of Mexico, gave themselves billions in bonuses, and paid no taxes?
Yeah, me neither.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnd... I think I need to get going now. Yep. Definitely.
*sits*
Did I mention I'm a slug today? I did? Right. Then I'll leave before I repeat myself further, then.
ETA: Ooooooooooooooooooooooooops. Today was early release. Parenting fail.

Date: 2011-04-13 06:37 pm (UTC)Have no worries. There are loads of us who feel socially awkward to a greater or lesser degree. Make sure your LJ name is on your badge, so we know who you are. Don't be afraid to go up to someone and poke them and say I'm Avery. Instead, be prepared for an onslaught of squeeing and glomping. Be prepared to be dragged along with any and every group - people won't worry if you don't want to talk. Some might ask if you're ok, but if you're happiest listening, then people will be happy for you to be there listening. Honestly, talk to pretty much anyone about their first con experience and you will hear the same story. We are in general a very warm and inclusive group, and it's about the only setting on the face of the planet where you can be yourself and be pretty confident people will like you anyway!
Oh, and whatever you do, make absolutely sure you get some time with Droxy!Snape. He is a phenomenon.

Date: 2011-04-13 06:40 pm (UTC)I've just read the Aeternitas Umbridge decree on harassment - I'm a bit sad they feel it necessary. I've sat with people of many races, religions, philosophies, politics, etc. at con, and at no time has anyone been attacked for expressing their views.
You'll see. It's a real eye-opener.

Date: 2011-04-13 10:07 pm (UTC)I actually got Snape's nose from LeakyCon (I joined people for dinner for one night). It rested on the face of my little artist's manikin (http://www.dickblick.com/products/wood-manikin/) for at least a year. It would still be there except for a minor flood a few months ago...
