Eek! Although I have done so occasionally, I sure was glad I was wearing one when I did a high-speed faceplant in my preteens. Probably saved my life, and certainly saved my intelligence!
It's remarkably well preserved for how old it is (I'm thinking thirty years old at this point. It was originally my sister's), and it's possible the majority of the degradation is just dirt, but yeah, point taken. Will do.
For a long time I didn't get a new one because this one was so much better than the new ones out there. But... well, technology has advanced, and maybe my helmet should, too. ;-)
