So, there was a thunderstorm here on Saturday that was actually a real, honest-to-god thunderstorm with hail and everything. I wasn't here, being on my way home from the wilds of Canada, but the evidence of the storm still remains. Mostly in the mud/silt slide that's covered a good half or two-thirds of my back garden. My poor babies. Ah well. Next spring I will be digging them up and transplanting the survivors to the veggie boxes for the summer, as our yard is leveled out in turn.

And, oh my, will it be leveled out! I didn't realize they were serious about making the yards level. I thought they were just going to level out the worst of the depression and that would be that. Nope. The mud/silt slide came directly from my neighbor's yard, which is now 3.5 - 4 FEET higher than it was when I left for vacation. The retaining wall is almost as high as the old chain link fence. Once the unclimbable new fence is put in on top of the wall, there will definitely be a lessening of trespassers.

So, yeah, my poor plants. Especially as they were buried by horrid fill rather than nutritious soil. Ach well. They might survive.

On the plus side, I came up with a plan for the back garden while away (my mum's garden is an amazing muse), and even if half my plants don't survive the muck, I'll still have enough to do what I want. Whee.

K. Nuff garden talk. What else?

Got a new phone yesterday. When I called Geoff from the airport (at 1 fricken 30 in the a fricken m) to ask him where my ride was, we could barely hear each other. I was yelling into the payphone (yes, I still don't have a cell), and I wonder if he woke up the neighbors yelling into our phone.

Anyway, yesterday we did a bit of investigating, and it turns out the phone itself was to blame, not a shitty connection. And, because the old phone was getting on in years, and generally a cheap POS, I made the call to just shell out the money to buy a new one. And if the new one happened to have some wireless handsets included, well, that was just happy days, right?

So yeah. We have a fancy-ish new phone, and finally (finally) have a handset that works in our bedroom. No more nude runs to the living room for ill-timed calls! Yay!

And, of course, with fanciness comes instructions, which is what I spent a good deal of today doing. Setting the time, the phonebook (it's been so long since I've had any variation of speed dial!), the message ("Hello, you've reached the Goodun household, but we aren't available to come to the phone right now. If you leave you name, number and any information you think we need, then we'll probably get back to you. Sooner or later.") and all that jazz. One of the handsets I've also set with a different ringtone (cheesy electronic Beethoven's 9th), but I have yet to figure out how to set them all. The instructions are there, but the phones aren't giving me the options needed to follow the instructions. *pouts*

So now all we need is a new netcard (at least the router wasn't fried like so many people's were) and we'll be up and running, technologically speaking.

What else?

Textbooks. I've decided to go for the international edition of one of my books, as that will save a minimum of $90 ($50 instead of $140, which was still well below any other pricing I found). Seeing as it's for a one semester class, I don't really feel much compunction about doing so. Textbook pricing is such a scam! I'll still have to shell out $150 for my other class' book, but at least that's for an entire year's worth of classes. May the next semester's books please be cheap! (ha.)

But hopefully, now that I'm doing the research about book pricing and such, I'll stop having nightmares about being unprepared for the upcoming semester. Maybe?

Speaking of dreams, I dreamt of my grandpa last night. It was very confusing, as I knew he was dead, but he was just as I remembered him (from 20 years ago). So I rationalized it into the person not being him, but just an eerie lookalike. Who was rather obnoxious, to be honest, but ach well. It was a dream.

Mmm. The pork roast and carrots are starting to smell good. Fortunately, we've already had dinner, so the wait (and aroma) isn't killin' me, but I hope they finish up soon. I'd like to try to go to bed a little earlier tonight. I left it way too late last night, and it was bad.

What else?

Nothing. I've spewed enough for the time being, I think.

Obnoxious look-alike. I suspect that describes many acquaintances among the living as well. ;)

*drive-by comment* Re: textbooks--Have you checked out dealoz.com? I go there first now whenever I need books. And I have also bought international editions of books--they're the same content but just may have fewer pictures or graphic (read:fancy) elements and possibly thinner paper and paperback instead of hardcover (which, frankly, makes them lighter to lug around, so yay!). Are rentals or buy-and-return-for-a-significant-refund-later options for you?
Good luck on finding the best deals on books!

Ooh, thanks! My prof said not to trust the int'l eds of these texts, so I guess I'll get the real deal. Ouch. However, that's a great site, and I managed to find one of the texts for less than I'd shopped around for, so yay!

Hmm, did your prof say WHY you shouldn't trust the int'l eds? B/c the ones I got were literally exactly the same--content, page numbers, etc--except the covers were different. *shrug* Glad you found stuff cheaper--textbook prices are a racket, I tell ya.

Different problem sets (or at least numbering of such has been skewy) and "different text emphasis." *shrug*

Total, total racket. Such a scam.
