(Large) Vacation photos
Aug. 15th, 2012 04:56 pmSo, I'm not going to do a full write up of my vacation, seeing as it was mostly just sitting around chatting with family, which was lovely and all but the reporting of which would bore you to tears. And I didn't really get out to photograph much while I was there this time, because, well, I didn't get out much, really. But there were a couple of short outings I recorded... (Some sideways scrolling might be necessary.)
A day or two after we arrived, we went to a bison farm. Yes, bison as in the buffalo whose home is on the range fame. My parents wanted Page to see the bison and water buffalo calves, as well as buy more bison sausage (MUST. FIND. U.S.A. SOURCE!), and thought it would be nice for the nieces to get back there before they left.

That's the bison daddy. He doesn't look huge in the photograph, but he is. 2400 lbs (more than a metric tonne) of hugeness. Interesting fact we learned is that bison can (and will) jump over anything they can see over. Hence the very high fence making this beast look kinda puny.
(Can you imagine 2400 lbs of hugeness sailing over a 5' high fence? *boggles*)

Cousin love on the way home! Both my sister's girls adore Page, but L and Page get along especially well.
The last evening of our trip, we went to this beach after dinner for a farewell stroll. We happened to get there just at sunset.

Look at those jagged peaks! And in the winter, those valleys are filled with so much snow that the mountain looks flat. (There is a reason I call these mountains The Guardians beyond the feeling they inspire. And there is a reason the islands are populated, while the mainland coast is not!)
I won't say that the majority of my vacation was spent painting, but I did put quite a few hours of work in on the mural this time 'round. I didn't get any snapshots of the Siberian iris leaves that I made much better, but here's the clematis in its almost finished state (this is how I left it):

And a close-up:

And, sadly, this is the only shot of my mum's garden that I took this year.
Still, I'm relatively pleased with it (though it's obvious I need a new camera). And I got it before that devil of a deer ate it and the rest of the rose buds, so yay.

Date: 2012-08-16 10:34 pm (UTC)I've got a little bit of work left to do on the clematis, and a load and half till I finish the entire mural, but I'm rather happy with what I've done, so thank you!
The bison calf was very shy. It would let one (quiet) child near it at a time, but was spooked if anyone took even a step toward it. The water buffalo calves however... They were all about the people. Well, when not trying to get more milk from a bottle or its brother's dangly bits. XD
Isn't Page freaking adorable? He's becoming more and more of a Boy every day.

Date: 2012-08-16 10:39 pm (UTC)This is about halfway up the east coast of Vancouver Island (off of Canada's west coast). It is stunning there, though most people can't stand the winters, just because of the latitude. I imagine it would be a nice change of pace for you Brits. :-) It's wild, though. Wild in a way that Europe hasn't experienced in many centuries, and perhaps millenia. It's a bit unnerving at first, though awesome once you get used to it.
