Did a bit of figuring, and, damn it, it would be better for us financially to stick with our ancient Camry. But the day is coming... The difference between keeping our car over three years or getting another used car is only a few thousand dollars.

So. I guess I'll go ask the school mechanics when they're doing catalytic converter replacements... And everything else that needs doing...

We didn't replace our inherited Camry until it was unsafe to drive. And then we just ended up replacing it with another hand-me-down grandparent car that still has a tape deck, so you can imagine.

Here's hoping you can pull a few more years of reliable driving out of the Camry now that you've decided to keep it. C'mon, school mechanics!

How do you (or a mechanic) determine if a car is unsafe to drive, anyway?

But, I guess our car is still in pretty good shape, considering its age and this climate. And I did some looking, and depending on what specifics the school mechanics need, I might be able to get the parts needed for less than %700. Yay!

How about some Miatas? *wants* ;-)

Generally speaking, if there's a mechanical issue that makes acceleration or braking unreliable , it's not safe. Ditto temperature control or exhaust (especially if exhaust gets into the passenger area). If you get your car serviced semi-regularly, you probablywon't have major structural issues, like my friend whose engine fell out of her car when she was driving it.
