Well, Page had his first appointment with his new (Medicaid accepting) counselor today, and while maybe I should be upset at the acronyms she threw at me, I am feeling almost giddy with relief.

She says that even in the short amount of time she was with him, Page's behavior "screamed" PDD/ autism spectrum disorder. She also said more information from other eyes (including the psychiatrist) is necessary before that can be an official diagnosis, so she's just (ha!) listing his appointments as treatment for ODD.

Thank God!!! (I'm not a projecting little hypochondriac! Yay!) Having this out and in the open means help will be SO much easier to get, both just with what to look for, therapy-wise, and at the school (still not easy, as she admitted; even with her advocacy it's going to be like pulling teeth).

However, the therapist said - with determination and authority, mind - that he WILL be getting at least a 504 plan, and probably an IEP. She recommended an occupational therapist nearby (who also accepts Medicaid) to start working on his emotional/control issues.

This I can deal with. This is... not exactly fixable, but a known quantity that, with such a mild case as his, will be workable.

So, yay.

But now I need to go skim the accounting chapter I'm supposed to have read by tomorrow morning.

Knowing is sometimes a lot more than half the battle. Because even if you have to push, you will have help dealing with the school system.

Isn't it such a relief to finally be able to treat him? I know it is the same with Kaleb. The school is sooooo understanding and caring. It makes a world of difference to have a label. I know it shouldn't but hey.

Congrats for going that extra mile babe. Things are going to get better.

Love Sonia :)

With a written diagnosis you can force the school to change him to OHI in his file--that's huge for getting him services/accommodations. Yes, you'll need an IEP (IEPs are for curricula/educational needs as well as behavioral accommodations; 504 is for behavioral alone and it may be a way they try to cheap out on him, if you have educational concerns, so stick to your guns and demand a full educational assessment from them or get an independent--the counselor may know what's available in your area).

Become familiar with IDEA. Look at the Wrightslaw website.

A diagnosis does make it easier, for you and for teachers at school. It gives them and you knowledge of how to help him learn to help himself. I'm glad some progress is being made on the diagnosis and hope that some real life progress with Page happens soon.

Oh, what a huge relief! I know there are many hurdles ahead, but just knowing that there IS something you can point to, that is recognised, and that there are people on your side, must feel like a huge weight off your shoulders.

It's so important to know what you're battling. Now you and the doctor can decide upon a plan of action.
