The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So ask me something you want to know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.

Faces. They're so easily recognizable, even if very difficult to render well. Also, they are just about the only thing that is reliably interesting that can be done without color. :-)

That is a story (http://averygoodun.livejournal.com/229452.html) in and of itself. Short answer though, is that he worked at the planetarium my friend and, eventually, I volunteered at.

How did you find HP fandom?

Can I have two?
I just saw you asked someone else this one and find it fascinating. What is your favorite word and why?

Of course you may!

HP: ... My sister introduced me to the books just before the release of Goblet, and I was completely sucked in. (I remember tending to the Gallery at which I then worked, and being impatient for the customers to leave so I could go back to reading. Bad Avery!)

I read and reread the books for the next couple of years, and right after OotP came out, I was hungry for as much info as I could get. Rumors, theories, anything. I searched around the net and found Mugglenet about then, and that led to everything else.

I really can't remember how I got into fanfic, though. I do remember visiting a Sirius Black site early on, though I wasn't overly impressed with it. I wish I could remember how I got into this section of fandom. FFN had something to do with it, but it's all very foggy.

As for my favorite word... I think it's synchronicity. Not only does it have nice sibilant rhythm that rolls off the tongue, its meaning is... erm, meaningful. It, like all things, is neither good nor evil, but it can be used to signify either end of the spectrum. The coming together of disparate ideas or actions into a relevant re/action is... is hard to explain. Like life.

Right. That's the rambly, incoherent answer. The more succinct answer is that I like the sound of it and have benefited quite often from bouts of it in my life, thereby giving the word extra meaning to me personally.

=)

Harry Potter book: PoA. It's masterfully thought out, very imaginative and the characterizations are the richest of the series, I think.

Outside of HP: ...Well, I reread "Pride and Prejudice" most frequently because it is the ultimate snarky, feel-good romance. And Lizzy rocks.

"Change Your Brain, Change Your Life" by Dr. Daniel Amen is probably my favorite self-help book because he puts scientific data/proof behind certain new-age quacked theories that do help but were poo-pooed until recently.

... And it's a toss up between my Art History book or the (US) National Gallery book for favorite browsing/reference book. National Gallery has more pretty (and very good quality) pictures, but the history book has more information.

I don't know what my favorite children's book is, though I do have a soft spot for "Green Eggs and Ham" for the younger kids and "Charlotte's Web", "The Trumpet of the Swan" and "Hatchet" for older kids.

My reading background is actually pretty limited, though (compared to most of my friends), and I tend to reread rather than expand my horizons. =)

What's the favorite thing you've ever written? Could be sentence, phrase or a whole story, and why?

That's actually a really tough question. I'm proudest of "Traitor," but "favorite" implies liking something, and I don't like "Traitor."

The bit that comes to mind that I like the most is when Hermione finds her way into the kitchens in "She Married Her Choice." I especially liked:

With one last supreme effort, she edged forward enough to get her head out of the hole, where hopefully one or another elf would see her, should they look up. Unfortunately, she didn't have the strength to hold her head upright, so her head flopped over the edge, and waves of her knotted, frizzy, brown hair cascaded down the wall like furry tentacles, blocking any view she might have had.

It wasn't long before she heard a high pitch scream and felt something prickly and bendy slapping her hair and head.

"Out, out! No furry creatures allowed in here!" She heard an elfish voice squeak in between another round of slaps. It really wasn't helping her headache any, truth be told.

Knowing she had the attention of at least one elf, Hermione made the concerted effort to raise her head, only to get slapped harder.

"Ger' off," she croaked, barely audible, but loud enough that all movement, all hustle and bustle in the kitchen, stopped, and Hermione could feel the eyes of a hundred house-elves staring straight at her.

Then the whapping continued with renewed vigor.

"I's not care whether you speak or not. NO fuzzy creatures in kitchen now!" the elf squeaked again anxiously.

I like it cuz I think it's funny. :-)

I actually don't really pay attention to the art scene, so I'm pretty out of date with what's going on. But one person whose craftsmanship I admire mightily is Bill Napier. A quick search didn't find any of his work online, but he's a current realist who could, imo, compete with Vermeer. And, well, Vermeer is kind of the gold standard for me. His works are jewels, finely cut, crafted and polished to show their lustrous depth.

I'm sure, if I looked, I would find others whose art is magnificent, but... *shrug*

God, I hope so. I'm still trying to figure out how to write the rest of the Australian interlude.
