The past few days have been rather taxing as I've been glued to the computer, watching the news unfold in Colorado. God, it's bad. Epically bad, actually. They aren't far off when describing it as "Biblical." I know I need to turn off the news, as it were, and just focus on the here and now, but... Of course, it's now that the good side of the flood is coming out, about how all the residents of the towns that are most affected are coming together to help each other. Like the diner owners in Jamestown who evacuated, but left their diner open for those who chose not to go... And basically all of the Hygiene (yes, that is a town name) residents helping each other clean up and rescue the stranded animals...

But, well, I do need to focus on the here and now. For the most part.

Speaking of which, Geoff's home sick with bronchitis. oh. yay. I forced Page out the door this morning (going so far as to give him a ride to school), even though he's not feeling well, either. So the house is descending into that mess again, which I am not thrilled with, but can't do anything about. On the plus side, Geoff should be feeling better in 24-48 hours (as the meds kick in), and I don't seem to be suffering from any lung ailments myself. I'm not 100%, but I'm definitely capable of doing most of what needs to be done.

Which leads me to the dreadfuled to do list:

Right. So, I guess I better get to work. Especially as the reading is best done when Page isn't here. *looks at clock* Shit. Ah well. Hopefully it was a good day and he'll be willing to earn back computer time...

Ciao!

Holy moly!

I... am rather glad not to be living in Colorado (especially the Boulder area) right now. Wow. They are getting pounded like nobody's business. By rain, of all things. And this rain storm's conditions might even be worse than the one that caused the Big Thompson flood (1976? '77?), because of the extreme heat drying out the ground (making it impermeable), along with the lack of trees due to fire. The landscape will probably be visibly different next time we're over there... Fortunately, there's a significant improvement in the alert system since the Big Thompson, so there should be far, far fewer deaths this time round.

But yeesh. Three dams have broken, Boulder is closed, Lyons and Jamestown are completely isolated (and very vulnerable), and the only way to get to Estes Park is by Trail Ridge Road...

I've heard from several of my friends in the affected areas already, kindly letting us know they're okay (though one has been evacuated, and I'm worried about her for her house because it's basically right on a stream), and I'll assume that the rest are okay until I hear otherwise, but my thoughts are definitely going out to all of them right now.

And then there's me... ;-) )

Good things

Because this morning's post was way cranky, a list of goodness:

1. Hot showers are wonderful. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Not only did this morning's wake me up a fair amount, it helped clear my sinuses a bit, which helped my overall feeling of well-being tick up into the positive section of life.

2. Before my shower, I managed to not only clear a path for the trash bins, but also clear enough of the driveway to be able to move the car up, should we choose to. The snow was heavy, but also nice and clumpy. With little ice on the bottom. I think it took me a total of 12 minutes to clear the 20 sq. foot area. If that.

3. Coconut flour, chai spiced muffins. Really, really yummy things, those. And they only use 1/2 cup of coconut flour! For realz! (The mashed cauliflower cottage pie I made was also pretty darn yummy.)

4. Central heating, slippers and sweaters. And not-too-strong tea. All very warming things.

5. Research that adds weight to my belief that it would be better to wait till 2014 to move, even if we both (all?) want to move now now NOW. Waiting two one and a half years would put us in a better situation overall, though. I think. And it's good to know that there are benefits to waiting, the clincher being that I don't think my New England community college credits would transfer to Colorado community colleges with ease. Hopefully they will transfer to a Colorado university with ease... Although, if necessary, I can always do online courses at SNHU. (bleh.)
