First, a (darkly) funny video.

The rest of the (mostly) randomness. )

But now it is time for bed. Although napping during the day this week has been good, I do need more nighttime sleep if I'm to get all the way better before school starts up again.

Stupid LJ. Although, at least it saved the entire draft!

But on the plus side, I got lousy sleep because the stuff in my sinuses finally decided to really move. So yay. My headache is much better (although still there), and I feel like the end of this thing is near.

Also, Geoff is coming home in a few hours. That'll be nice.

Random.

- Spent Mother's day waving away a cloud of mosquitoes (real mosquitoes, not those puny gnats that were at Aeternitas) while we collected more rocks for my garden. Upside: The inner circle is now completed and ready for filling. Downside: Despite all my layers of clothes and the bug spray covering what was exposed, I got a tick. Ew. Geoff had a tick as well, but it hadn't bitten him. They are so incredibly small, it's rather amazing what a big problem they pose.

- Speaking fandom, you need to go read Dial G for Granger. I don't read much fanfic anymore, and what I do read is usually limited to SS/HG, but this Dramione fic is gold. Possibly platinum. Should regular HP fanfic awards be revived, they need to make up a new category for the best use of Navy SEALs so this fic can win that along with the best humor title. Seriously. Go. Read.

- Geoff to Page yesterday: "If you can't use an insult properly, don't use it at all." I laughed so hard, I was afraid I was going to crash the car.

- V. tired today, but I've done a surprising amount, which is rather novel. Almost caught up on laundry, including all bedclothes. The kitchen, however, is still untouched.

- I have discovered I am a jello junkie, which is a bit surprising as I loathe and despise the flavored boxed stuff. But I've eaten almost 3 quarts of the juice-made variety since last Wednesday. Like, an entire quart over the course of a day... And I don't share, either. It's bad.

- Had a fit of the angries today. I'm upset with myself for various reasons, but I thought I had it under control. Guess not. At least I was by myself.

- Page eating almonds is becoming a major pet peeve of mine. I have nothing against the almonds themselves, but how he smacks his lips and crunches and... It grosses me out more and more and more. I swear it's a cumulative gross-out effect. And telling him to chew with his lips closed results in a loud denial and then a whopping ten seconds of silent chewing.

- I have guests coming over on Sunday. The to do list in my head is rather frightening.

- Neighbor has ruined Antonio Banderas for me. I didn't realize until I flipped onto the Zorro sequel the other day that Neighbor really has more than a passing resemblance in both looks and voice. *pouts* Stupid neighbor. *pouts some more*

- I am simultaneously looking forward to the summer and dreading it. I am so looking forward to seeing my family again, but I'm starting to fear we won't be able to make it thanks to my mistakes. I need to find work, and I don't have the energy to look, not after taking care of everything that needs to be done at home.

I'm really hoping I can manage this upcoming school year. I have basically decided that if I can't manage to do it part time, I need to apply for disability. The thought makes me rather ill. No pun intended.

Book rec

If you can get your hands on a copy of Shaun Tan's "The Arrival", do so. It's an amazingly effective (and affecting) tale about immigration told through images. No words.

The images themselves are gorgeous. Tan is an amazing artist with a gift of whimsy that softens the blow of realism.

Really, check this out.

("Tales from Outer Suburbia" by Tan is also definitely worth looking at. I haven't read all the stories (it has words) yet, though, so it gets a separate ovation when I do.)

Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] zalena, for the recommendation(s)!

I really recommend The Apothecary's Assistant – or – Witch Austen's Revenge. Really recommend it.

Not only does it have the best first line since Pride and Prejudice, but the author of this piece puts Hermione in Pride and Prejudice, but as Mary, not Lizzy! (That's the first chapter reveal, so no spoilers there.)

It's fabulous.

Go read. Enjoy. Give love.

Oh, wow!

Unabashedly romantic animal pics. Absolutely gorgeous.

I hope that someday my art will have as much... eloquence.

Okay, a lot of you have McTabby on your flist, but for those of you who don't and do like Austen!fic, here's a gem for you: The Dancing Monkeys.

It's a Mansfield Park/Persuasion crossover gen fic that takes us with Henry Crawford after the events of Mansfield Park.

Brilliantly done.

So, for those of you who haven't actually read Anne of Green Gables, I really, truly recommend you try to get your hands on a copy. You might even be able to find a free one online, I don't know. All I know is that this is a book that gets better with age. I don't think, prior to this current reading, I had realized just how funny it is. As I was reading it last night, I was giggling away like mad. I had forgotten how spunky Anne is. The abundant sarcasm on LM Montgomery's part also surprised me, as I did not remember that element at all!

Anyway, if you haven't read it, do. And do not replace the book with the movie/series. Not. The. Same!

December already? )

Happiness )

I think I'll end there. Oh, except that we had the first real snow of the season last night. When I looked out the window at 7:30, the sun was just peeking over the tree and rooftops, but the lower sky was still a golden pink that faded into icy blue as it went up. It was nice, but what made it special was that everything else was shadowed white. The trees were sugar-coated, as were the rooftops and the ground. It was wet and warm last night when the snow started, so the ice was there to hold all the snow in place.

It was worth waking up for, even if I do want a nap now.

The Girls Next Door.

(It makes me so happy I can almost forget about the stupid waking-up-late dreams I had (dreams, plural) this morning starting two hours before the stupid alarm was set to go off.)

It is silly as all get out, but I am totally addicted and I love it and I love Wednesdays because of it. Thanks to the fangirl who recced i!

So, Happy Wednesday!

Long day

Although not as long as some crazy folks' days.

Long (rather boring) story: )

Really long story a bit shorter: Babe and I had an hour to kill after dropping Geoff off for his real appointment. Without going shopping, because we both have cooties. So I drove. And I drove. And I drove.

And by gosh, this is a beautiful part of the world. Emerald fields next to apple laden hills. Woods changing color, and lily-pad filled ponds. Old stone walls, old foundries, old farms, and, at the top, a view of the hills going down to the sea.

For six months out of the year, I truly wouldn't mind an hour commute if I had to drive the route we took. The winter months, however... *shudders*

We got back about 4:30, and, curiously, I felt rather refreshed. Beauty does that to me. I still have a sore throat, my back hurts and I'm going to have a bitch of a headache tomorrow because I wasn't very good today, sugar-wise, but...

One of the best things I saw today was actually not the prettiest visually: a new apple orchard. An acre or two of someone's yard filled with young apple trees.

That gave me hope. A person willing to invest in the future while everyone else seems to be selling theirs to be paved over. That was the most beautiful sight in hours of beautiful scenes.

Oh, and on another good note, I have a story rec. Read more... )
