Worst headline ever? I mean, it's like a bad translation from Chinese (a google translation, to boot), except that it's not. It's a bad summary of the first sentence/paragraph:

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's weekend reform of its currency regime nails shut the coffin on the last remains of doubt about whether the world's second biggest economy has successfully steered a course past a hard economic landing.

For some reason, I expected better of you, Reuters. *tsks*

First, another amusing comment stream on yahoo, this one about, wait for it, education. Aw yeah!

I especially like this one: QUESTION: What are the schools expensis besides utilities and employees. Why are costs going up so much and so quickly?

*blinks*

But pretty much all of them are amusing for one reason or another.

*

Test today was much easier than expected. I probably could have foregone half of the cramming I did in the last three days. Half of the test (almost exactly) was about stuff I learned in accounting last semester, so I better have gotten that right. And another quarter was on content we covered in class, so... I think I did well, even if I probably didn't get 100%.

*

My garden is growing. It's supposed to snow tonight and tomorrow, but I'm not too worried, as it's not supposed to get cold enough for anything to accumulate.

Meanwhile, I'm plotting and planning what to do with the front garden. I have approval to plant a red twig dogwood shrub and a star magnolia, though I'm wondering if perhaps I should go with a pink dogwood tree. And, of course, crabapples really are very lovely...

Whatever tree I choose has to be fairly small or it will interfere with the power lines and suffer odd pruning. (And I've decided against birches because they're shallow-rooted).
I've also determined that the poor eunonymus that's clinging to life in the shadowy corner out front (and will need to be moved anyway, as we're getting an arborvitae there) will go beside the power pole. which will, in turn, be more or less next to the red twig, and on the other side of the red twig, I'm thinking of putting a mop cypress. Main thing I'm looking for, of course, is winter color.

I don't know. I'm going to have fun going to all the nurseries, though!

Religious freedom vs. Health care requirements...

*sigh*

All this hullabaloo about the legality of the Obamacare mandate is making me twitchy and sad. Honestly, I think the conservatives have a point about the legality of the mandate, which is why I wasn't crazy about this plan to begin with. However, I'm trying to be optimistic. Perhaps if this law does get tossed out (though please let it stand!), a single-payer system will be offered as the only viable alternative. (I do not consider rebates of a couple thousand dollars on $15,000 insurance plans as a realistically viable option.)

And it's not like it would be bad for insurance companies! After all, a government provided health insurance system (which is what "single-payer" is) would have to be pretty basic in nature, covering only basic doctor's visits and emergencies procedures/care. So, the current oligopoly of insurance providers would still be in the same business, and employers would still be able to offer "good" insurance as a perk in their benefit packages ("Our insurance covers all prescriptions!" "Our insurance offers chiropractic care!"). Who's to lose?

(The implied argument that breaking the tie between employment and health insurance will encourage layabouts is as false as "trickle-down economics." Getting everyone covered, no matter their employment status, would probably boost the marketplace because it would encourage entrepreneurialism, as people wouldn't feel tied to jobs they hate (and only put in the bare minimum of effort on)!)

Oh, and the best part about a single-payer system? None of these religious freedom claims could be made. Every single person in the world who pays taxes is paying towards something they morally oppose. Assuming they have morals at all (and if they don't, they probably aren't paying taxes). No exceptions. If an employer doesn't like the insurance options (birth control, blood transfusions, whatnot), they don't have to offer it! Their employees will still be covered! It's a total win-win situation!

However, I think that if the law gets tossed out, it's more likely to take us one step closer to revolution, simply because it will highlight even further the disconnect between the conservative ideals of "freedom" and the modern reality of living in civilization.

It will also highlight, once again, the questionable set-up of our unelected, unimpeachable "justices."

The upshot of all this is that I need to stay away from the news from now till June, if possible. I don't see that happening, but I need to make an effort. This plus the other injustices I see blaring out across the internet makes me feel very, very pessimistic about the future.

Well, that and the inevitability of a not-perfect score on my test tomorrow. It's hard to get a perfect score when more than one answer is technically correct (on a multiple choice test). *sigh* I so don't like her tests. (priorities: I haz them!)

But I had to share this gem of a spoof of the Tebow-mania.

(For non-American friends, Tim Tebow (the bow is pronounced as in bow-tie) is quarterback (throwing dude) of the Denver Broncos football (hand-egg) team. He has been a HUGE story over here because as soon as he was put in as starter (lead throwing dude), the Broncos suddenly started winning, rather miraculously. And by miraculously, I mean that they really shouldn't have won because they played like crap until the last quarter Every. Single. Game. Plus, he throws like shit. So, add to the miracle wins the fact that Tebow is OVERTLY Christian, like, in-your-face-thank-you-Jesus-for-everything type Christian, and takes to kneeling in prayerful thanks after every touchdown ("Tebowing"), and you have wonderful parody material.

Oh, and Tom Brady is the New England Patriots throwing dude. He is a seriously good quarterback who beats the snot out of just about everyone in the field today, talent-wise. Plus, he's hot. Google him.)

Anyway, I hope all of you can see this clip, because it's a thing of beauty.

Here's a seasonal surreal greeting from Bob Dylan:

Happy holidays, all.

Apparently Christmas lights are pagan.

~blinks~

Um... The whole Christmas ritual as we celebrate it is pretty pagan, really. And seeing as the roots of Christmas go back to early Christians co-opting Saturnalia to get more followers... Yeah. It's pagan. So what? I'm not a JW, so I really, really don't care.

That said, it's finally starting to feel a bit more like Christmas around here. Having the (pagan) tree up with the lights aglow and the days cold helps with that feeling, I think. Too bad it's going to warm up again for Christmas... :-(

I had horrible dreams last night. Like earth melting, new jeans ripping, friends' houses catching on fire because of illness dreams. With cats.

I think it might have been the sweet potato I had with dinner...

Dinner last night was wonderful. It's nice to know that I actually can create an entire feat on my own now! I was reflecting on that while I was preparing one thing or another yesterday, that in all the years I've been married, I have never had the endurance to do the feast-cooking thing. So, anyway, I am patting myself on the back for not only a very tasty meal with TONS of leftovers, but for actually doing it. I rock.

The best part of the meal, of course, was dessert. That carrot cake is A! Mazing! Especially with the whipping cream yogurt frosting (with orange extract and zest added). Hooboy. I think I might have even regained a pound or two I've lost over the semester thanks to that cake! ;-)

The worst part of the meal (which Geoff and Page would completely disagree with me about, btw) was the sweet potato. It was totally not worth the guilt of eating it. It was so... bland. And, seeing as sweet potatoes aren't grown anywhere near the northeast, I can't even blame the wet weather for the blandness, like I can for this year's squash crop (which have all been tasting terribly watery).

Ah well. The boys were really, really happy with the sweet potatoes, so probably my taste buds' lack of enthusiasm is my body telling me that I shouldn't be having that veggie anytime soon.

So, anyway, because of my dreams (and tripping over my own feet and possibly pulling a muscle in my back on a pre-sunrise bathroom run), I wasn't in the best of moods this morning. However, it's incredible how little can change that around.

http://www.weather.com/outlook/weather-news/news/articles/nasa-texas-drought_2011-12-01

The article itself is not a mood lifter, seeing as it's about how severe the drought in Texas is. No. I actually didn't even read the article (as I clicked on it for pictures, dammit!) The first comment, however, is completely made of win.

So that and Subversa's trampolining elephant... Yeah. I'm now smiling and just about ready to start the day. Bills to pay, essays to write and fruit flies to kill. Sounds like a good one, doesn't it? ;-)

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

There are a couple of intelligent (rather than just politic (or plain dumb)) answers in there, but for the most part... Ouch.

However, this parody is hilarious.

I didn't sleep well (I have too much bitch in me, I suppose), so I'm feeling a little snarky this morning. And after reading the first headline listed below, I thought I'd troll for more. This is all from Yahoo News.

"Vitamins May Increase Women's Risk of Dying, Research Finds"

Because we're immortal otherwise...

"Chinese fury as US Senate passes currency bill"

Unfortunately, I don't think that is translated from Chinese...

This one needs the visual. Check out the "SCIENCE [emphasis mine] Slideshows" titles (1-4).

And the winner (because it made me laugh hard at the level of understatement):

"EU says Chiquita, Pacific Fruit ran banana cartel"

What you missed while not watching last night's GOP debate.

I'm guessing the writer, Michael Scherer, is not a Republican.

It's hilarious. If you don't have time to read it all (I don't right now), just read the first paragraph. It's worth it.

Careful, there. There's a shark in them thar woods.

No wonder the moose have all gone to Maine. ;-D

Sent my exchange piece off to the beta. We'll see what she says about it. In the meantime, I should start the quilt block for T.

No other real updates here. After all, it's the end of the world as we know it, and I do feel fine.
